Second-degree murder charges against Derek Chauvin, George Floyd's killer
The other officers on the scene are charged with abetting and aiding second-degree murder.
Charge against former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin was upgraded from third-degree murder to "unintentional" second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Experts are saying that the second-degree charge appears to be appropriate, with no need to prove any intent to kill Floyd. The upgraded charge comes with a maximum sentence of 40 years, compared to 25 years for third-degree murder. The three other officers on scene during his killing were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. The former officers are Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng -a trainee- who helped restrain Floyd, and Tou Thao, who stood near the others. Derek Chauvin's bail was increased to $1 million Wednesday. Lane, Kueng and Thao were taken into custody Wednesday and are also being held on $1 million bail, according to county jail records. Derek knelt on Foyd'd neck while Alex Kueng held Floyd's back and Lane pressed down his legs. Floyd repeatedly said, "I can't breathe" and "Mama, please, Mama"! Floyd even said "I'm about to die", but the officers did not back off. This continued for almost nine minutes until Floyd became motionless at 8:25 PM. J. Alex Kueng checked for Floyd's pulse. He said: "I couldn't find one." Floyd was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Centre and immediately pronounced dead. Maya Santamaria, who used to run El Nuevo Rodeo night club in Minneapolis, Minnesota, said both George Floyd and Derek Chauvin, the police officer who knelt on his neck and killed him, worked as security guards for the club from 2017 throughout 2019. Business Insider reported that Derek Chauvin, who has been charged with murder and manslaughter following the death of Floyd, had been involved in a number of shootings and violent conduct. Ten complaints were filed against him in his 19 years with Minneapolis Police.
